How to Properly Measure for a new Refrigerator
One of the most important pieces of information that you need to find out when picking a new refrigerator is what size will fit in your kitchen. It is very frustrating to buy the appliance of your dreams, the one that will meet your every food storage and beverage need, only to find out upon delivery that it doesn't fit.
When sizing up a refrigerator, you need to have 3 basic measurements from your kitchen refrigerator Cabinet cutout:
1. Width
2. Height
3. Depth
While this seems elementary, there are a few details about each measurement that are important to know.
Width
This measurement has been standardized across all the major brands, so that the difference between brands varies only fractions of an inch. This being said there are 3 standard refrigerator widths being sold:
1. Full size: 36" Width (actual widths average 35-1/2")
2. Compact: 33" Width (actual widths average 32-1/2")
3. Apartment Size: 30" Width (actual width average 29-1/2")
NOTE: Modern refrigerators do NOT need much of a gap on the sides of the refrigerator, so a snug fit is fine. A 1/4' to 1/2" gap on each side is sufficient.
Height
This varies from model to model quite a bit, and can often be the hardest measurement to fit. You will notice when looking at refrigerator specs that there are always 2 measurements provided:
1. Cabinet Height: Measurement of the outer shell of the refrigerator.
2. Door Height: Measurement to the top of the door (including hinges).
You want to make sure that you leave a few inches at the top of the refrigerator cabinet to allow for proper airflow to the back. This will keep the compressor cooler and keep the cooling system working longer.
Depth
Depending on the design of your kitchen, you may not want the refrigerator cabinet to extend out much past the cabinet. You will need to visualize how far out you are comfortable with for the refrigerator to protrude past the cabinet cut-out The normal kitchen counter is about 25" deep, so anything more that this is what will extend past the counters.
Also pay attention to details like the proximity of anything in front of the refrigerator (islands etc) to make sure that the space is not too tight.
There are 2 main depth categories for refrigerators:
1. Standard Depth: generally 32"-35" (including handles)
2. Counter Depth: generally 26"-27" (including handles)
Tip: Pay attention to how the door swings to make sure that you will have enough room for the door to swing open and shut without anything getting in the way.
Delivery Tips
1. Check the Delivery Pathway to make sure that you have the room to get the refrigerator in the Kitchen.
2. The doors of a refrigerator can be removed by the delivery team to get a refrigerator through a tight doorway.

Here is an example of what dimensions will look like when searching online. Pay special attention to the various measurement (with or without handles, cabinet height vs door height, measurement with door open etc).
