Single Cooling -VS- Twin Cooling Refrigerator
While the technology behind twin cooling refrigerators is not new, the affordability of this technology is. Now that this feature is somewhat common, here is why you should buy a refrigerator with a TWIN COOLING SYSTEM.
What does Twin Cooling Mean?
Twin Cooling: One compressor connects to two separate evaporator systems. One closed system for cooling the refrigerator, and another closed system for cooling the freezer.
Why does this matter?
Benefits:
1. To maintain Ideal humidity (think fresh food): The ideal humidity level for your refrigerator is 70%, and you want as little humidity in the freezer as possibly. Higher humidity in the refrigerator will keep your vegetables fresh for a longer amount of time. On the flip side, little to no humidity in the freezer section will prevent freezer burn and ice crystal formation.
2. To prevent odor transfer: In a traditional single cooling system, air travels between the refrigerator and the freezer section, and back again. If you have fish, onions or anything else that has a strong odor in the refrigerator, this odor will transfer to the items stored in the freezer. You might think that the items in the freezer are air tight, but you would be surprised how odors and smells can permeate packaging.
3. To save Energy: Not only are the compressors that are used in these newer refrigerators more efficient, but the twin cooling process also helps save energy. Twin cooling lets the compressor cool only the section that needs cooling. If you rarely open the freezer, but open the refrigerator often, then the freezer doesn't need to be cooled as often to maintain the proper temperature.
How to Know if a Refrigerator has this technology:
Every brand has a different name for this twin cooling technology, so you will need to know the marketing name that each brand uses. Here are the most Popular brands and what they call their Twin cooling systems:
Kenmore - "Genius Cool"
Kitchenaid - "Preserva Food Care System"
LG - "Smart Cooling"
Samsung - "Twin Cooling or Twin Cooling Plus"
Whirlpool - "Accu-fresh"
Here are some of the refrigerators that I recommend:
1. LG 32 cu ft French Door Refrigerator Model: LFXS32726S
2. Samsung 31 cu ft French Door Refrigerator: RF31FMEDBSR
3. GE Profile 28 cu ft French Door Refrigerator: PFE28RSHSS
